This allegorical landscape is a sculptural reenactment of the Battle of Lexington that tells the story in a new way. It conveys the courage and vulnerability of the small militia of farmers and craftsmen led by Captain John Parker who confronted the overwhelming force of the 220-advance guard of British Army regulars led by Major John Pitcairn.
This monument challenges us to reflect upon the events of that fateful day that lead to the American Revolution, and to ask: What are the lessons of the American Revolution for today and tomorrow? Can a Revolution go too far? How do we carry on their gift of freedom and democracy? How do we make it new?
